Readying For Winter

Many think the farming season ends with the first hint of coldness in the air. While this makes it much harder to farm, the season does go on. We bundle up in layers, and work on getting all of our tender greens (kale, chard, lettuce, salad mix) covered with hoops, plastic, and weighed down with sandbags for our Winter markets and Late Fall share. Our high tunnels are filled with salad mix, spinach, December bunched carrots, radishes, and more. Storage crops are coming out of the field daily. Our cooler is slowly filling with Winter radishes, carrots, turnips, beets and more. We currently have about 2,000 pounds of storage crops in the cooler with at least another 2,000 to go. Once it gets really cold it will be a matter of maintaining the daytime temperatures in the high tunnels between 60-80 degrees. Too large of a temperature swing and the crops will die, too cold during the day and they won't grow. The crops also need carbon dioxide and plants in a tunnel that is shut up snug will use up the carbon dioxide very, very quickly. We hope all of our late Fall CSA members have enjoyed their first share! This week is just Full share members only! Pickup is from 2-8 pm at dig yoga in Lambertville. We're also at the Wrightstown farmer's market on Saturdays from 9-1 until the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Come stop by and say hi!
